Andrea Pichl zeigt im Schaufenster des Projektraumes KORN der Heinrich-Böll- Bibliothek ihre Installation „THE DREAM BEFORE“. Neben dem Neubaugebiet, in welchem sich die Bibliothek befindet, war der Architekt Roland Korn ebenso mitverantwortlich für zahlreiche Repräsentationsbauten wie dem ehemaligen Staatsratsgebäude, dem Hotel Stadt Berlin, jetzt Park-Inn-Hotel, dem Haus des Reisens am Alexanderplatz als auch für das Nikolaiviertel und die Wohngebiete Marzahn und Hellersdorf.
Andrea Pichl lehnt sich in ihrer Installation „THE DREAM BEFORE“ an originale DDR-Schaufenster-Gestaltungen an. Schaufenster, egal wann und wo, transportieren Botschaften und sind Vermittler zwischen Produkten und vorübergehenden Passanten. Während aus kapitalistischer Sicht das Verkaufen im Vordergrund steht, die Warengesellschaft ein Bild von sich selbst produziert und zugleich verleugnet (Walter Benjamin), existierte in der DDR eine eigene Werbetheorie, die sowohl systemkonform sozialistischen Richtlinien entsprach als auch ebenso häufig deutlich von ihnen abwich – sie konnte Normalität herstellen, Identität stiften, aber auch im kreativen Umgang mit dem Mangel subversiv und durch Vertuschung dessen sehr ironisch sein.
Andrea Pichl verwendet in „THE DREAM BEFORE“ gebrauchte, privat erworbene Vorhänge aus DDR-Zeiten mit vertrauten und weit verbreiteten Mustern aus der DDR-Textilindustrie. Die DDR-Textilindustrie galt, obwohl geprägt durch uneffiziente Fertigungsabläufe und veraltete Maschinentechnik, als die größte auf dem Gebiet der Ostblock-Staaten. Die Qualität war trotz der Technik auf hohem Niveau und die DDR wurde zu einem wichtigen Versorger für Ost und West. Dennoch wogen der Export und das Devisengeschäft schwerer als die Versorgung der heimischen Industrie. Mit dem Fall der Mauer brach die ostdeutsche Textilindustrie nahezu vollständig zusammen.
Der Schriftzug „Wir dekorieren für Sie um“ in Arabella-Schreibschrift, eine der gängigen Plakatschriften in der DDR taucht ebenfalls auf einer der Stoffbahnen auf, wie „(…) ein unwiederbringliches Bild der Vergangenheit, das mit jeder Gegenwart zu verschwinden droht (…)“ (Walter Benjamin).
Der Titel „THE DREAM BEFORE“ ist eine Komposition von Laurie Anderson, die auf Benjamins Thesen zur Philosophie der Geschichte basiert. „The Dream Before“ enthält den ikonischen Satz „Geschichte ist ein Engel, der rückwärts in die Zukunft geblasen wird“ und zitiert seine Überlegungen zu Paul Klees Gemälde Angelus Novus.

Andrea Pichl shows her installation „THE DREAM BEFORE“ in the window of the project space KORN of the Heinrich Böll Library. In addition to the new development area in which the library is located, architect Roland Korn was also responsible for numerous representative buildings such as the former Staatsratsgebäude, the Hotel Stadt Berlin, now Park-Inn-Hotel, the Haus des Reisens at Alexanderplatz as well as for the Nikolaiviertel and the residential areas of Marzahn and Hellersdorf. Andrea Pichl’s installation „THE DREAM BEFORE“ borrows from original GDR shop window designs. Shop windows, no matter when and where, transport messages and are mediators between products and passing passers-by. While from a capitalist point of view selling is in the foreground, the commodity society produces an image of itself and at the same time denies it (Walter Benjamin), the GDR had its own advertising theory, which both conformed to socialist guidelines in accordance with the system and just as often clearly deviated from them – it could produce normality, create identity, but also be subversive in its creative handling of lack and very ironic by covering it up.
In „THE DREAM BEFORE“ Andrea Pichl works with used, privately acquired curtains from GDR times with familiar and widespread patterns from the GDR textile industry. The GDR textile industry, although characterized by inefficient manufacturing processes and outdated machine technology, was considered the largest in the territory of the Eastern Bloc countries. Despite the technology, quality was at a high level and the GDR became an important supplier for both East and West. Nevertheless, exports and foreign exchange business weighed more heavily than supplying domestic industry. With the fall of the Wall, the East German textile industry almost completely collapsed.
The writing „Wir dekorieren für Sie um“ in Arabella script, one of the common poster fonts in the GDR also appears on one of the fabric panels, like „(…) an irretrievable image of the past that threatens to disappear with every present (…)“ (Walter Benjamin).
The title „THE DREAM BEFORE“ is a composition by Laurie Anderson based on Benjamin’s theses on the philosophy of history. „The Dream Before“ contains the iconic phrase „History is an angel blown backwards into the future“ and quotes his reflections on Paul Klee’s painting Angelus Novus.
